Insider Tip

New Audubon Center Opening

May 2009

New Audubon Center Opening
Audubon Ohio is developing the state’s first urban Audubon Nature Center at the Whittier Peninsula site, which has been designated an Important Bird Area of critical habitat. The most exciting element in the Audubon Center project is the opportunity to build within the downtown community. We will empower urban youth to enjoy and protect the nature in their own backyard instead of busing children to nature somewhere in the suburbs or country. Rather than reinforcing the destructive message that everything worthwhile is located outside their own community, we will instead ensure an experience that will return a long-lasting positive impact for the urban community. This is the perfect place to live! Better than Hawaii AND Paris! I really love it, and hope all of the United States of America has a FULL DAY to experience the ENTIRE city!

The Columbus Zoo is a terrific place for both children and adults... this is the zoo where Jack Hanna became famous and the attention has brought a lot of wonderful exhibits and events to the Zoo. They do all sorts of special seasonal events such as Eggs, Paws & Claws at Easter or Boo at the Zoo on Halloween, for a nice place for children to go trick-or-treating at their treat stations. It is a great place to spend a day outside with the family and seeing animals in very well designed exhibits.

Columbus has a lot of nice small districts filled with lots of charm (German Village, Victorian Village, Short North and Italian Village.) There is always something to do. Every first Saturday of the month Columbus has an art hop in the Short North District. Local artists show their art and many of the small wine stores have tapas and wines on display. If you are into wine, Columbus has lots of nice boutique wine shops. Columbus has some great little bistro restaurants (Grandview area) and great pubs and bars. It does get a little crazy around OSU football season which I could do without but if you are a guy, I am sure you would love it!

This trip was a fast one, so I did as much as I could in short order. Being that I have never been to Columbus, I had mailed away for a visitor's guide, and that in itself was quite helpful. I tried to plan a route from maps online and points of interest. I truly enjoyed the COSI museum and the Titanic exhibit. There are tons of great places to eat and sights to see. North Market on Saturday morning is the place to be for fresh fruits and veggies, as well as many fresh baked goods!
